Broccoli is a fantastic vegetable to grow yourself, and at its most nutritious when eaten when as fresh as possible. The Calabrese varieties of broccoli produce large heads from late summer into autumn. Harvest when heads are well-formed but before flowers begin to open.

Growing Info:
Sow March-May. Sow outdoors 1.5cm deep into pre-watered, fertile soil. Thin out seedlings 45cm apart when large enough to handle. If sowing under glass, sow 0.5cm deep into trays or pots of seed compost. Transplant into larger pots and acclimatise before planting out May-June, or when risk of frost has passed.
Aftercare:
Will need protection from butterflies, caterpillars and cabbage root fly. Horticultural fleecing is best for this. Keep plants well-watered. Side shoots will develop when main head is harvested.
